What is BWRT?

Origins and Recognition:

Inspired by breakthroughs in neuroscience, BWRT gained traction following Terence Watts' encounter with Benjamin Libet's seminal experiments in the early 1980s. This therapy has earned academic acclaim, featuring prominently in esteemed publications like "The Bright Side of Shame" and receiving recognition with a Ph.D. from Lincoln University, UK. Ongoing clinical trials at the University of Bergen, Norway, underscore BWRT's commitment to empirical validation.

Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT) was developed as a result of research inspired by Libet's 2011 experiments on subconscious brain activity. Despite initial doubts about the validity of Libet's findings, subsequent research, including studies by Stephen Hawking, confirmed the existence of a cognitive gap of approximately 0.35 seconds between brain reactions to stimuli and conscious awareness.

This gap is attributed to the rapid functioning of the reptilian complex, also known as the lizard brain, which reacts instinctively without conscious thought. The lizard brain is the part of our brain that deals with information about what's happening around us and possible dangers. It doesn't think like our conscious mind does. Instead, it reacts to things automatically based on what it's used to.

In BWRT, they stress that this part of our brain doesn't think logically or decide if a threat is real. It just reacts as if it is, because that's how it's been trained, even if the threat isn't actually there.

When our fight-or-flight response kicks in, it happens before we even realize it. People might tell us to calm down, but it's hard because our brain's alarms have already started ringing, and calming them down isn't easy. If we're responding out of fear, calming down can take time because the alarm has already been triggered, and more fear keeps coming up before we can manage it.

The lizard brain has been crucial for our survival as a species. It's been around since the earliest creatures, helping them eat, sleep, breathe, reproduce, and stay alive. We still have it today, buried beneath our newer mammalian brain and our human thinking brain.

The lizard brain is like the first responder to anything that happens in our life. Imagine something suddenly flying at you – you don't consciously decide what to do, you just react instinctively, and that's the lizard brain at work. BWRT aims to intervene during this cognitive gap, preventing symptoms from reaching conscious awareness and thus providing a unique approach to therapy. The therapy has evolved into a comprehensive system with training programs covering general psychopathology, the psychology of identity and behavior, and psychobiology. BWRT has shown promising results in addressing a wide range of issues, including addiction, autoimmune disorders, and cancer-related psychological challenges, making it a distinct therapy system.

How BWRT Developed:

BWRT's development stems from Terence Watts' extensive experience working with clients and his relentless pursuit of innovative therapeutic solutions. After encountering Libet's experiments, Watts embarked on a journey to integrate neuroscience principles into psychotherapy, culminating in the birth of BWRT in 2011. This amalgamation of clinical expertise and scientific inquiry led to the creation of a therapy that transcends conventional approaches, offering unprecedented speed and efficacy in addressing psychological issues.

BWRT aims to rewire the brain's response to stressors, offering rapid and enduring relief from anxiety, phobias, and habits. Diverging from conventional talk therapies, BWRT circumvents the need for disclosing sensitive past experiences. Instead, it leverages innate psychological mechanisms to effect profound shifts in behavior and cognition.

How it Operates:

BWRT is highly versatile and can assist individuals with a wide range of psychological challenges, including but not limited to:

These diverse applications highlight the versatility of BWRT in addressing a broad spectrum of psychological and behavioural challenges, offering hope and support to individuals seeking positive change and enhanced well-being.

Advantages of BWRT

BWRT Institute - BrainWorking Recursive Therapy- Soukya Health and well being - Vanessa Searle
  • Unlike traditional therapies that may require months or even years of sessions, BWRT often produces noticeable results in just a few sessions. Furthermore, the changes brought about by BWRT tend to be lasting, providing clients with long-term relief from their psychological challenges.

  • BWRT does not rely on the use of post-therapy devices, special breathing techniques, or other external aids. This simplicity makes it accessible and convenient for clients, eliminating the need for additional tools or resources.

  • For those who are hesitant or unwilling to confront painful past experiences, BWRT offers a viable alternative. By focusing on present concerns and bypassing the need for detailed discussions about past traumas, BWRT provides a more comfortable and non-invasive therapeutic experience.

  • While traditional talk therapies delve deeply into past experiences and underlying psychological issues, BWRT takes a more proactive approach to addressing anxiety and other challenges. By targeting the brain's response to stressors directly, BWRT can help alleviate symptoms quickly, making it an effective complement to long-term talk therapy approaches.
