What is BWRT?
‘BWRT®’ stands for ‘BrainWorking Recursive Therapy®’, a model of psychology and psychotherapy created by UK professional therapist, Terence Watts, MCGI.
Like many other modern therapies, it allows a ‘core of privacy’ so that you do not have to divulge anything you would rather not talk about – in fact, the practitioner only needs to know how you feel and how you would prefer to feel instead.
BWRT® is a completely new and different therapy based on the latest discoveries about the way the brain works and how it affects our moods, behaviour and emotions. Only Certified Practitioners have been trained to deliver BWRT® and all have to adhere to a strict ethical code.
What makes BWRT so different?
BWRT works with a different part of the brain to most other therapies. Many neuroscience-based therapies work with the amygdala and the limbic system, whereas BWRT works with the part of the brain that fires up before the limbic system even gets started. This very early part of the brain is known in biological terms as the ‘lizard brain’ and the ‘reptilian complex’ according to the evolutionary model. It is the oldest part of the brain structure, dating back some 650 million years when the first sentient creatures walked the planet.
This part of the brain processed every impulse from the physical body and the world around it. It is always looking for patterns, testing for matches that have occurred and worked in the past. If it succeeded in the past and somehow fits with the current situation it lets us know by creating a neural pathway that fires up that response for how we should be reacting in this situation. The challenge most of us experience at some point in our lives is that some of the responses that worked in the past may not be valid responses to the current situation any more. The other problem we face is that we just don’t want to feel a particular way about an issue or circumstances that occurred in the past anymore but we can’t seem to change the response we have now, it’s like it just happens without us having any control over it.
Why does this happen you ask? Good question!
Why can’t I control my emotions?
The brain works so fast that when a pattern of impulse is recognised, the body starts to respond before we are even aware of it. This response or reaction has been set up by the reptilian complex which is purely instinctive and driven by a process so much faster than conscious thought. We actually don’t become aware of it until that impulse has travelled up to fifty metres of neural network before it hits the part where awareness occurs.
The brain isn’t very logical and is like a computer, just processing data and using pattern recognition and pattern matches that have worked best in the past and were therefore valid. So if the pattern worked previously, the brain will opt for the same pattern match, and hence the same response will occur. That means, emotional connection to the data only comes later in the Neomammalian complex, the logical, thinking brain where awareness occurs, which really means we have little control over it nor an ability to change it. This is also why we see adults responding like toddlers or children to certain situations. The brain is also not chronological, it isn’t aware of time, it just responds based on the last response that led to survival, whether you were 3, 7, 13 or 40yrs old.
So, how do we change our responses, I hear you ask!
How Does BWRT work to change our responses?
BWRT works on releasing and changing the emotional response, memory of a particular situation, or fear of a response to a situation before it reaches the logical part of the brain. The changes occur to the part of the brain before emotional response arises, which as mentioned earlier, is where BWRT differs from other therapies such as EFT and EMDR which work at the emotional response and negate it. BWRT works in the cognitive gap between the event and awareness. It works by creating new neural pathways, new responses and how it does this is quite simple and starts with you knowing how you want to feel around a situation, how you want to respond instead of how you have been responding. It’s really that simple!
What can BWRT work on?
So what can BWRT work on? Level 1 BWRT works on almost anything that has a situational response such as anxiety, depression, fears, phobias, habits, traumas etc. It is awesome for kids too and if you can pinpoint a moment at which a problem or anxiety started it will work on this. If you know what you want to accomplish, how you want to feel, what it felt like and a time at which you felt this feeling, it will be released and the neural pathway upstream and downstream will also change. If you have generalised anxiety it may only take a few sessions to notice a number of situations that caused anxiety will just dissolve. It is faster than CBT, EFTR, EMDB, and EFT and anecdotal evidence suggests that these issues never arise again.
Level 2 BWRT works at core identity on deeper core beliefs that may be limiting you or causing deeper issues such as alcoholism and drug abuse amongst a number of things.
Level 3 works on Pathophysiology such as bowel issues, crohns disease, tinnitus, stuttering nerve regeneration and many more issues.
So in conclusion, BWRT is very client centred, it is very permanent and you can go back into the situation almost immediately and find that your stress and anxiety levels around the issue are either completely gone and you feel very different.
How do sessions work?
An initial consultation is required to discuss the current issues you may be going through. From here I will decide if BWRT is the right choice for your current situation. There may be a number of things that we need to do prior to commencing BWRT, including doing some Kinesiology first to clear a number of things out of the way in order to ensure the best outcome for you.
